A couple of months ago I looked at my wardrobe and thought “Wowsers, I really have a lot of skirts and dresses”. Obviously I had a handful of favourite pieces I’d wear all the time, but there were quite a few I’d never wear, for no particular reason. Others I never really loved or they didn’t fit properly anymore (too loose, to tight, too long, too short). I knew I had to do something about it, and that I’d have to part from some of them forever. But how to make a decision? Trying them all on in one go? Or spreading the ‘fashion show’ over a couple of weeks?
Eventually I went with wearing each and every single skirt and dress once for a full day and deciding if I wanted to keep it or to donate it to charity (or take it to a clothes swap) at the end of it. I started on 1 August and from then on I took a picture of each outfit and posted it under the hashtag #askirtaday on Instagram. I know someone who did the same thing with her full t-shirt collection, and I enjoyed every day of it. So maybe others did enjoy my long-term-wardrobe-clean-out as well?
Some of my skirts never made it into a picture – I put them on in the morning and decided I couldn’t leave the house wearing them, so they went straight into the give-away bag. Others went into the washing machine at the end of the day and from there into the give-away bag. The others I kept. There are still too many…
And here they are: 64 of the 66 skirts and dresses I own as of 1 November 2014. Two very summery dresses didn’t get their picture taken, since they’re just for holidays in very hot countries. There will never be a day to wear them in Wellington.
