30 Days of Me (1) – Introduction

I thought choosing a recent picture of myself would be reasonably easy, but I was very wrong. First of all, I’m usually the one with the camera – I take the pictures, so I’m not in them. And if I’m in them, I’m still the one holding the camera – but this time an arm length away, pointed to myself and with my head inseparably attached so someone else’s. Anyway, I found one, here it is:

And here are 15 more or less interesting facts about me (in no particular order):

I am adopted – I moved in with my lovely parents when I was only a few days old. I have a biological sister and brother; I met them for the first time only 5 weeks before I permanently moved to New Zealand. They are awesome.

I bake my own bread.

I have a lovely godchild in Germany. Her name is Marie, she’ll turn 4 in a couple of months. I wish I could see her in real life more often, rather than just via video chat.

I love cats but don’t want to really “own” one myself, so I usually try to befriend neighbour’s felines. Current victim’s name is Max, he lives up the road but enjoys hanging out with us. He’s on Twitter (@karoricat).

Pet peeve: Apostrophes. There are only 2 rules that really matter – if you know and apply them, you’re already pretty good. An incorrectly used apostrophe changes the meaning of what someone’s saying, and it makes me feel like the author doesn’t care if anyone gets their content or not. That doesn’t mean that I do it right all the time, but I guess I’m pretty close to 99%.

I was in Tokyo earlier this year and I absolutely loved it.

I won’t have children. I don’t see the point in it and never have. I’m quite vocal about this, which leads to me always being the last to know if one of my friends is pregnant. But not wanting children on my own doesn’t mean I don’t like them. So relax, it’s ok for me if you breed.

Many of my friends have children, which means that they are no longer available for most of the things you’d usually do with friends. But they force you to participate in different activities, such as going to the beach, to the playground, to a wildlife park or playing a game of charades. And they invite you to see the world through their children’s eyes. So not all is lost, there’s some gain in having breeding friends as well.

My mom died when I was 29 and I still miss her.

One of the few disadvantages of being in New Zealand is the lack of choice, which sometimes drives me crazy. Especially when I comes to clothes and food. Oh, and the slow, unreliable Internet. Drives me crazy, too.

I have a TV set, but I can’t receive any TV programmes. I don’t miss it.

My husband has a PPL (Private Pilot Licence), but flying is more fun in the sun – bring on summer!

After school I did an apprenticeship at a bank. The certificate you get in Germany for this is called “Kaufmannsgehilfenbrief”.

I have a scooter. It took my ages to finally get my NZ motorbike licence (and I’m still on restricted), but it’s good to be back on two wheels after many, many years.

Last night I was lying awake for a while, worried that I wouldn’t get 15 facts about me together.

30 Days of Me – Tag 1

Ich war davon ausgegangen, dass ein aktuelles Foto rauszusuchen nicht sonderlich schwer sein würde, doch ich hatte mich getäuscht. Zum einen bin ich normalerweise diejenige mit der Kamera – ich mache die Bilder, also bin ich nicht auf ihnen zu sehen. Und falls ich doch drauf bin, bin ich immer noch diejenige die die Kamera hält, nur diesmal auf mich selbst gerichtet und normalerweise untrennbar mit dem Kopf von jemand anderem verbunden. Egal, ich hab trotzdem eins gefunden, dort oben ist es.

Hier kommen meine 15 Fakten (in keiner bestimmten Reihenfolge):

Ich bin adoptiert – nur wenige Tage nach meiner Geburt bin ich bei meinen wundervollen Eltern eingezogen. Ich habe eine leibliche Schwester und einen leiblichen Bruder, die ich 5 Wochen bevor wir nach Neuseeland gezogen sind zum ersten mal kennengelernt habe. Sie sind super.

Ich back mein eigenes Brot.

Ich habe ein Patenkind in Deutschland. Ihr Name ist Marie, sie wird bald 4 und ich wünschte ich könnte sie auch im wirklichen Leben öfter sehen, statt immer nur per video chat.

Ich liebe Katzen, aber ich möchte nicht wirklich selbst eine haben, deshalb freunde ich mich mit freundlichen Miezen aus der Nachbarschaft an. Unser momentanes Opfer heißt Max, lebt ein paar Häuser die Straße hoch und liebt es, bei uns abzuhängen. Er ist auch auf Twitter (@karoricat).

Mein absolutes Reizthema ist das Verwenden von Apostrophen im Englischen. Es gibt nur 2 Regeln, die wirklich wichtig sind – wer diese kennt und anwendet, macht schon vieles richtig. Wird ein Apostroph falsch angewendet, wird der Sinn des Satzes geändert, und ich habe das Gefühlt dass der Autor sich nicht darum schert, ob sein Text verstanden wird oder nicht. Das heißt nicht dass ich es immer und überall richtig mache, aber ich glaube schon dass ich ziemlich nah an 99% bin.

Vor ein paar Wochen war ich in Tokyo und fand es super genial dort.

Ich werde keine Kinder haben. Ich sehe da für mich absolut keinen Sinn drin, und hab zum Glück in Kai jemanden, der das genauso sieht. Da ich mit meiner Meinung zu diesem Thema nicht gerade hinter dem Berg halte, bin ich natürlich immer die letzte die erfährt, wenn jemand aus dem Freundeskreis schwanger ist. Aber nur weil ich für mich keine Kinder will, heißt das noch lange nicht, dass ich Kinder nicht mag. Also entspannen bitte, es ist ok für mich wenn ihr brütet.

Viele meiner Freunde haben Kinder, was bedeutet dass sie nicht mehr für all die schönen Dinge zur Verfügung stehen, die man mit Freunden so macht. Allerdings treiben sie uns in Richtung anderer Aktivitäten, wie Strandbesuche, Spielplatzinvasionen, Tierparks oder Scharade-Spielen. Und sie laden uns ein, die Welt durch die Augen ihrer Kinder zu sehen. Es ist also nicht alles verloren, es gibt auch Positives an Freunden mit Kindern.

Meine Mama starb als ich 29 war und ich vermisse sie immer noch.

Einer der Nachteile am Leben in Neuseeland ist der Mangel an Auswahl, ganz besonders wenn es um Kleidung oder Lebensmittel geht. Und das langsame Internet geht mir oft auf den Geist.

Wir haben einen Fernsehapparat, können aber keine Fernsehprogramme empfangen. Vermisse ich aber auch nicht.

Mein Mann hat eine Privatpilotenlizenz, aber wir gehen viel zu selten fliegen.

Nach der Schule habe ich eine Ausbildung in einer Bank gemacht und den Kaufmannsgehilfenbrief dafür erhalten.

Ich habe einen Roller. Es hat Ewigkeiten gedauert bis ich mich zum neuseeländischen Motorradführerschein aufgerafft hatte (und ich bin immer noch auf der eingeschränkten Lizenz), aber es ist gut endlich wieder zwei Räder unterm Hintern zu haben.

Letzte Nacht habe ich eine ganze Weile wach gelegen, weil ich nicht wusste ob ich 15 Fakten zusammen bekommen würde.
