Kein Wunder dass Deutschland “hinterherfliegt”

by Kai on 01/06/2008

Mann, Mann, Mann…

Was fuer ein Schwachsinn. Was mich am meisten daran aufregt sind drei Punkte:

After being reasonably happy about Germany in my last post, I was reminded today why we have left this country. I wanted to go flying – easy as, you’d think, given that I’m nearly done with my PPL training in New Zealand.

Ha, well – the reality is – I can’t. To officially become a student pilot in Germany one has to be registered with a particular authority (not even the CAA equivalent) and would have to hand in a medical, police certificate, driver’s merit points certificate, copy of my passport (probably to check if I’ve been to Iran or Pakistan) and I’d have to be security checked.

Anyway, although I do have that I don’t have it in German(y) and therefore I can’t be an official student pilot (not even for 1 hour) and I can’t fly the plane from the left with an instructor on the right. I could theoretically sit on the right and the instructor could let me fly the plane unofficially.

I’m really irritated by that for three reasons:

1. I’ve been to the US two weeks ago and it was not really an issue at all re “security” etc.
2. The stuff the German authorities want me to deliver to do a simple thing such as taking a flying lesson are more than what the New Zealand immigration authority wanted us to bring for gaining residency in NZ.
3. In Wellington I fly at the international airport among 737s and large Airbus planes. If I wanted to commit a terrorist attack – guess where I would rather do it compared to the short grass strip in Ober-Moerlen which I’d have to share with sailplanes.

Germany really sucks when it comes to regulations, this is an absolute bizarre country.

Was soll das Theater? Was fuer ein Schwachsinn.
