30 Days of Me (14) – Me and my family

by Diane on 22/09/2010

My family in the closest sense is the setting I grew up in: Mum, Dad, me as a single child. There were two grandmas, too. When I started looking for photos of me and my parents yesterday, I was pretty shocked that I couldn’t find any. I know they must exist, and I’m certain that there are at least some of my childhood photos that show the three of us, but I don’t have them in New Zealand. So I have to come up with a rather lame compromise:

This is a photo of a photo from 1995. It has Kai in it, that’s almost as good as if it was me, right? So, left to right we have Kai, my dad, my mom and my grandma. They all don’t look particularly good in this picture, but I swear in real life they (did) look much better! And look at all the food on the table! The picture was taken in the backyard of my parent’s house, on a barbeque night.

This one is a bit more recent, it’s from 2008. I had just spent two months in Germany with my dad, and this was the day he dropped me off at a friend’s place in Bad Nauheim the day before I flew back to New Zealand. We did a quick round through the city to test a new geocache my friend had been setting up. Again, this is a photo of a photo – it’s part of a calendar my dad made me for 2009.

But I have more “family” than just the few people who are legally related to me on paper.

This is my brother Hannes and my sister Gabi (well, they’re my half-siblings, we share the same genitor), with two of my sister’s children, Sonja and Stefan. My nice Eva is missing in this picture, she could’t make it on the day the photo was taken (which was during the same trip to Germany as the photo with my dad above). They are all very awesome.

And because that’s still not enough family for one person, I received another branch of patchwork-family a few years ago: my dads new partner Mechthild and her children. They are super-ok as well, but I don’t really have a photo I could publish here.

30 Days of Me – Meine Familie und ich
